In case you missed the breaking news today, we are THRILLED to report that OUR HAWAII YOUTH PLAINTIFFS WON! HUZZAH!
Today Governor Green announced that his administration is settling with the youth plaintiffs in Navahine v. HDOT!
This Settlement Agreement confirms that youth have constitutional rights to a clean and healthful environment and that the state of Hawaii has an obligation to protect youth’s interest in a stable climate. The State must now develop and implement a roadmap to meet the state legislature’s goal to decarbonize Hawaii’s economy and achieve a zero-emissions transportation sector by 2045.
The voices of these youth plaintiffs were heard and met with direct action! Their bravery, perseverance and hope secured a monumental climate victory for young people and all people in Hawaii, and around the world!
Mahalo nui loa to everyone for making those calls to the Governor and urging him to use our resources to fight climate chaos not our keiki. He listened! Call him again to thank him.
Special MAHALO to our friends at Earthjustice and Our Children’s Trust for their work to secure the legal rights of these youth. Our collective efforts are truly making a critical difference in the fight against Climate Breakdown.
