Dear Voters–
On June 27, we sent a message to all 11 non-incumbent Honolulu City Council candidates, asking whether, if elected, they would support a resolution with these RESOLVED clauses:
BE IT RESOLVED that the City and County of Honolulu will actively oppose all new infrastructure within its jurisdiction related to fossil fuels; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City and County of Honolulu commits to a genuinely bold energy agenda establishing a goal to meet 100% of energy needs for all the community, and all ground and water transportation fuel, with clean renewable energy by 2030 and establishes sector-by-sector targets within the next 12 months; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City and County of Honolulu shall not “transition” through LNG or spend another penny on dirty energy as soon as practicable.
Three candidates responded:
Tommy Waters said, “I absolutely support kicking our dependence on fossil fuels and establish meaningful goals of 100 percent renewable energy. I am not sure we are able to accomplish this by 2030, but it should be the goal, and I would certainly support this resolution in one form or another.”
Zachary Stoddard said, “Environmental stewardship is at the heart of my campaign. In fact, the main reason I decided to run against incumbent Carol Fukunaga is because she killed the bill to ban styrofoam take-out containers here on Oahu. I’m proud to say I would wholeheartedly support a Fossil Fuel-Free Resolution and a carbon-neutral future.”
Ikaika Hussey said, “Yes I would.”
Be sure to vote!
